Thanks! I've been there once, and enjoyed (well, that's not quite the right word, but you probably know what I mean) it, but it's also not quite what I'm looking for, I think mostly just because of how large it is. Don't mind me, I'm an introvert :-}.
But it's worth having on the possibility list--thanks for reminding me of it.
If you were a completely different person, I'd offer to hook you up with the Salem crowd; there is actually a fairly serious Samhain ritual buried in the middle of the stupidity, but having been there once, I wouldn't touch it again with a barge pole. The ritual itself is nominally closed and has a decent (mostly older) crowd, but the place as a whole is, in this introvert's eyes, beyond the most horrible depths of horribleness.
Chuckle. From your description, I'd agree that braving the crowds and likely kitch (this is a key part of Salem's economy, after all) is not worth the payoff. But thanks for the thought.
This is composed of folks who were at Unicorn and have continued some rituals and classes at the Masonic Temple in Cambridge. They do a lovely ritual but it is large (especially Samhain).
I will be doing some stuff on my own. I have the day free. If you want to come together for a mini ritual, let me know.
Thanks for the comparison info; that's the way I'm leaning (if only that I've done ESC and not LOTG). I agree with you about Chris Penczak; I've seen him leading a ritual, and he's impressive and neat.
It will be good. I like it much better than any ESC I went to but I also know most of the folks very well. I wish we could join you for LOTG but we have to be elsewhere.
Thanks! I've been curious about Lap of the Goddess; I've seen references to them from the MITPSG list, and I've meant to check them out. And I may well take you up on the mini-ritual; something small earlier in the day and something large later could be a nice balance.
The link from the page specifically for the Samhain ritual doesn't lead anywhere (at least, I ended up at the myspace main page); do you have a more direct link/information about the event?
Samhain Celebration Saturday Nov 3, 7- 9 PM Masonic Hall 1950 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02140. Write lapofthegoddess@hotmail.com to register. Please pre-register. $15-25 sliding scale. Celebrate the Celtic New Year and Festival of the Dead. At this time of year the veils between the worlds are said to be the thinnest and communication with the spirit world is easier. Traditionally we commune with the ancestors of blood and spirit. During this intense ritual, work with the powers of the otherworld through ritual, dance and visionary journey. Make peace with the spirits of the dead, receive wisdom from the ancestors and honor the Goddesses and Gods of the Underworld. You are welcome to bring a memento or photograph of an ancestor, blood relative, spiritual relative or other deceased person you love or admire, for the ancestor altar. All faiths and traditions welcome.
Of course I love ours, but Witchvox lists about a gazillion. (http://www.witchvox.com/vn/ev/usma_ev.html) If you're curious, you might try the WES event (http://www.witchvox.com/vn/vn_detail/dt_ev.html?a=usma&id=53410) (I've been to their non-ritual events and they're generally well-organized, at least). I also know a bunch of people who like the Society of Elder Faiths stuff. (http://www.elderfaiths.org/events/spring07)
Open circles held in public (ie, rented) spaces have a certain economic imperative to make them work; if what you want is a dozen people, you probably need to find or make a closed group :)
Thanks for the pointer! And yes, good point about open circles (though even that you can get around--MIT's events vary a lot in size, I suspect because they're insulated from the economics).

If you change your mind about the "too large" thing...
